A new piercing is a fresh wound, so giving it the right care is important for a smooth healing process. Cartilage piercings can take 4–12 months to heal completely, and healing times vary from person to person.
Begin gentle aftercare and expect swelling and bleeding.
Some piercings may feel settled and be ready for downsizing.
Continue care until your piercer confirms healing.
Piercings heal from the outside in. This means your piercing may look and feel healed on the outside while the inside is still healing. Even when it feels fine, continue with proper aftercare until it is fully healed.
Some things are completely normal during the healing process.

Small bumps or irritation can sometimes develop around a healing cartilage piercing. They may appear during the early stages of healing or even after the piercing has been healing for a while.
Bumps can have different causes, including irritation, pressure, friction, jewelry material or fit, and individual healing differences. The most important thing is to avoid picking, squeezing, or irritating the area further.
If you're concerned about a bump or your piercing isn't healing as expected, contact your piercer so they can assess it in person.
Healing doesn't always go perfectly and that's okay.
If you're unsure whether something you're experiencing is normal, don't panic and don't pick at it. Reach out to your piercer so we can help assess what's happening and recommend the appropriate next step.
